Many people think of Lake Havasu City as Arizona’s playground. Stunning desert scenery contrasts with beautiful sunny weather and the blue sparkle of the Colorado River and Lake Havasu waters. There is a long list of leisure activities to choose from covering every level of action. You can find so much here - whether your sport is warming in the sun and watching the boats go by or racing a boat over 100 miles per hour, strolling in the park or hiking in the wilderness.
As a Lake Havasu City real estate owner, you'll enjoy the added benefits of the home town friendly, informal atmosphere. Property taxes are affordable, crime rates and humidity are low. The average commute time is 18 minutes, traffic is usually light and there are no aggravating mosquitoes. Clear air means you can enjoy the beautiful big sky and long views in the area, and star gazers see the Milky Way most nights.
Lake Havasu City, close to the borders of Arizona and California, was founded in 1964. Robert McCulloch created a planned community in the foothills of the Mohave Mountains surrounded by the Sonoran Desert and blessed with the river and lake. Regular subdivisions weren’t part of his plan so homes were “spot built”, providing interesting individual architecture for almost every home on each street. This young town still looks fresh and new.
Mr. McCulloch brought a little bit of history to town when he purchased the old London Bridge from Great Britain and had it dismantled, moved by ship and rebuilt on a peninsula on Lake Havasu. Then he excavated a channel so water flows and boats float under the bridge. He created English Village with medieval Tudor style buildings that house restaurants, a pub and specialty shops. The London Bridge is a focal point for the city and the second most visited site in Arizona.
This town is known for its over 55,000 caring, active residents and family friendly style. The Community Center has space to hold a wedding or accommodate a sports event. The Aquatic Center is a covered fantasyland with a 257 foot enclosed water slide, wave action pool and children’s lagoon. Come to the “Dive In Movie” or the Zumba exercise class in the pool. Lessons and team swimming are available. Plan a birthday party or just enjoy some free swim time.
The annual Fall Fun Fair is held in Rotary Community Park with food, games and fun for the whole family. Movies in the Park are shown there too. Everyone is surprised by the accomplishments of local kids presented at the Annual Youth Talent Show where music, magic, dance, drama and comedy are all part of the act. Many social organizations are active here. You’ll find Elks, Moose, Masons and Eagles clubs. Most religious denominations are part of life as well.
The goal for Lake Havasu Unified School District is “Preparing for tomorrow – one child at a time.” Over 90% of the schools in the district rank in the top two levels of a six level rating system used by the State of Arizona. There are charter and private schools available as well. The Lake Havasu City Parks and Recreation Department provides the after school program at every elementary school. It offers help with homework each day in addition to arts and crafts, performing arts, a fishing program and sports activities.
Mohave Community College provides education beyond secondary school. Through a partnership with North Arizona State University, students can obtain a bachelor or masters degree without leaving home.
Homes in most neighborhoods are unique, not built by a single builder with a fixed number of styles and floor plans. Homes are generally suited to the desert surroundings, single story with tile roofs and landscaping planned with low rainfall in mind. Low-E windows are popular. Many properties include a pool or spa and covered outdoor living space to provide shade from the sun.
Residents of Arizona’s playground have a lot of toys. Many homes have large garages to accommodate recreation vehicles, boats, motorcycles and ATVs in addition to the family cars. There are homes in every price range. You can find a mobile home or a grand estate with every amenity and upgrade.
